Queer Couples Therapy Available in Portland, OR

Even strong relationships can reach moments where things feel stuck, repetitive, or harder than they used to be. You may find yourselves having the same arguments, struggling to feel understood, or noticing a growing emotional distance. If this sounds familiar, turn to Arielle Fettman, MA, LMFT

As a therapist offering queer couples therapy in Portland, Oregon, I work with couples—primarily women—who want to better understand these patterns and create a more connected, supportive relationship. My role as a counselor is to provide a space where both partners can slow down, feel heard, and begin to shift the dynamics that no longer serve them.

Common Reasons Queer Couples Seek Therapy

Queer couples may face challenges such as communication breakdowns, recurring conflict, or feeling emotionally disconnected. Differences in needs around intimacy, boundaries, or long-term goals can also create tension.

In addition to these common relationship concerns, queer couples may navigate unique stressors such as societal pressures, discrimination, or lack of family support. These external factors can impact how partners relate to one another and may add complexity to conflict or emotional closeness.

Therapeutic Techniques I Use to Help Queer Couples

My approach to queer couples therapy is integrative and tailored to each couple’s needs. I draw from Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help partners understand the different “parts” within themselves that may influence their reactions and communication patterns. I also incorporate Intimacy From the Inside Out (IFIO), which applies this parts-based work specifically to relationships, helping couples better understand each other’s inner experiences.

In addition, I use techniques from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to support emotional regulation and effective communication. Mindfulness practices are also an important part of my work, helping couples stay present and respond thoughtfully rather than react automatically.
